Hi there. Welcome to Well Lit Soul. Where we seek God, face darkness, and shine brighter. This season of the blog is all about encouragement. So today’s blog is called: How Great is Our God.
Back in August, I was fortunate to be able to attend Polishing the Pulpit. It’s a Christian conference for all ages meant to encourage and edify the saints. There were several sessions, speakers, and takeaways, but one that stood out was one preacher who said “God wears the Milky Way as a crown”.
I was blown away! Not just because it’s true but the way that visual puts into perspective how powerful and majestic God is. We already know how unfathomable the Milky Way is. But to know that God wears it as a crown! Whew! I don’t know about you but my heart swelled so much I could cry. Because that is my God! My Lord and Savior! The Creator of the universe and everything within it! Talk about how encouraging it is to be able to get a grasp of God’s might and power. Because who else do you know is going to create galaxies? That’s right, no one!
So for the last blog of this season, I want to share a hymn, song, and a few scriptures that show how awesome God is! Bring all of my favorite avenues of encouragement together and give glory to God.
The hymn is, ‘Have You Seen Jesus My Lord?’. I was introduced to this song in college and it truly humbled me the first time I heard it. The first verse says, “Have you ever stood at the ocean with the white foam at your feet; Felt the endless thundering motion? Then I say you’ve seen Jesus my Lord.” Talk about sensational! To recognize how Jesus is in the details all around us if we just take a moment to acknowledge His creation.
Next is a song called “How Great is Our God”. I really like the way the choir sings the chorus in the first half of the version “How Great” by Chance the Rapper. But I also like the original version by Chris Tomlin. Particularly the lyrics that say,
“He wraps himself in light / And darkness tries to hide / And trembles at His voice / Trembles at His voice / How great is our God, sing with me / How great is our God, and all will see How great, how great is our God.”
And as much as this beautiful music highlights the magnificent nature of God, nothing will do it better than scripture. So let’s look at a few Psalms that really show the resplendence of our Creator.
Psalms 19:1: The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Psalms 33:6-9: 6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. 9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
Psalms 95:3-5: 3 For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods. 4 In His hand are the deep places of the earth; The heights of the hills are His also. 5 The sea is His, for He made it; And His hands formed the dry land.
Psalms 147:4-5: 4 He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. 5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.
Amen! Look at God! And if this wasn’t enough, there is one more facet of God’s awesome power that I call back to when I need some encouragement. It is referenced in both the Old and New Testaments in Genesis 18:14, Jeremiah 32:27, and Luke 18:27, where God Himself speaks and says, “Is there anything too hard for Me?” WHEW! I don’t know about you but I am buzzing! My spirit is on fire to know what a mighty God I serve! There is NOTHING too hard for my Lord and Savior.
And I’m grateful that as awesome and as powerful as He is, that He loves me and cares about the things going on in my world. He’s so invested in my heart and soul that He sacrificed His son to cleanse my sins so I could live with Him eternally. So I’m more than happy to sacrifice my personal desires and adopt His so I can please Him and fellowship with true and everlasting power.
This Christian walk is not easy and honoring the covenant God established for us requires ongoing work. But knowing who you’re doing it for puts life into perspective and makes it all worth it.
Connection Question: What’s hymns, songs, and scriptures help remind you of how great God is? What aspects of God’s nature encourage your spirit?
Let me know in the comments, I’d love to connect with you about it.
